Note #024: Gavin Doty (Siena Sophomore Ironman)

Former Siena guard Gavin Doty has decided to follow his coach, 2003 National Champion (as a player) Gerry McNamara, from the Saints to Syracuse for the 2026-27 season.

As a sophomore with Siena in 2025-26, Doty was a workhorse, averaging 18.0 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 2.2 APG, 4.5 FT/G in 36.8 MP/G.

Since 1947-48, there have been 57 NCAA Division I men's sophomores to average at least 18 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 2 APG and 4.5 FT/G.

Of those, ten shot 80+% on those FT attempts. They are:

155-175 FTA
1. Bubba Wells (1994-95) - 19.3 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 2.0 APG, 4.6 FT/G, 83.0 FT% (132/159)
2. Tucker Neale (1992-92) - 21.9 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 2.3 APG, 5.0 FT/G, 81.5 FT% (141/173)

175-199 FTA
3. Gavin Doty (2025-26) -
18.0 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 2.2 APG, 4.5 FT/G, 85.8 FT% (157/183)
4. Ryan Gomes (2002-03) - 18.4 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 2.1 APG, 5.1 FT/G, 84.0 FT% (163/194)

200-300 FTA
5. Larry Bird (1976-1977) - 32.8 PPG, 13.3 RPG, 4.4 APG, 6.0 FT/G, 84.0 FT% (168/200)
6. Luke Babbitt (2009-10) - 21.9 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 2.1 APG, 5.9 FT/G, 91.7 FT% (199/217)
7. C.J. McCollum (2010-11) - 21.8 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 2.1 APG, 6.4 FT/G, 84.5 FT% (197/233)
8. Charles Bradley (1982-83) - 26.7 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 2.0 APG, 5.9 FT/G, 80.4 FT% (189/235)

300+ FTA
9. Alec Burks (2010-11) - 20.5 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 2.9 APG, 6.6 FT/G, 82.5 FT% (249/302)
10. Pete Maravich (1967-68) - 43.8 PPG (!), 7.5 RPG, 4.0 APG, 10.5 FT/G (!), 81.1 FT% (274/338)

And for fun/because we can't resist, the four sophomores (out of the 57 earlier) who sustained the PPG, RPG, APG, FT/G benchmarks across 35+ GP are:

1. Alec Burks (38 GP)
2. Gavin Doty (35 GP)
3. Blake Griffin (2008-09) - 22.7 PPG, 14.4 RPG, 2.3 APG, 5.5 FT/G (35 GP)
4. Caleb Swanigan (2016-17) - 18.5 PPG, 12.5 RPG, 3.1 APG, 4.7 FT/G (35 GP)

And if we lower that threshold one game to 34+ GP, Babbitt now enters along with:

1. Lionel Simmons (1987-88) - 23.3 PPG, 11.4 RPG, 2.5 APG, 5.8 FT/G
2. Caron Butler (2001-02) - 20.3 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.0 APG, 4.6 FT/G
3. Jerry Stackhouse (1994-95) - 19.2 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 2.7 APG, 5.4 FT/G

Back to just the 10 free-throw marksmen (80+%) from before: let's note, Doty's 4.5 FT/G was 56th of the 57 qualified sophomores, and he was 46th in FTA (183).

Gomes was 40th in FTA (194), Bird (200) was 32nd. Maravich (338) and Burks (302) were 1st and 3rd, respectively.

Doty was 57th PPG, t-46th RPG (his 5.5 DRB/G was 18th), and he was
t-39th APG.

Thirty-eight of the 57 attempted a 3 - of those that did, Doty was one of seven to average at least 1.3 3P/G (46/141, 32.6%).

Charles Bradley also gets a ref in Note #005 on Juke Harris.

Butler and Swanigan receive shoutouts in Note #007 on Isaac Celiscar.

🏀
Let's look deeper at the 2025-26 season:

There were 18 NCAA Division I men's players (all classes) to average at least 18 PPG and 6.5 RPG.

If we tack on 2+ APG, the list narrows to 11.

Add 4.5+ FT/G as well, and we're down to eight. Here they are (by class):

Seniors
1. Keyshawn Hall - 19.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 2.6 APG, 6.3 FT/G
2. Malik Reneau - 18.9 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 2.1 APG, 4.7 FT/G
3. Leonardo Bettiol - 18.1 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 2.1 APG, 4.9 FT/G

Juniors
4. Paulius Murauskas - 18.4 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 2.1 APG, 5.1 FT/G

Sophomores
5. Gavin Doty - 18.0 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 2.2 APG, 4.5 FT/G

Freshmen
6. AJ Dybantsa - 25.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 3.7 APG, 6.5 FT/G
7. Cameron Boozer - 22.5 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 4.1 APG, 5.8 FT/G
8. Caleb Wilson - 19.8 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 2.7 APG, 5.4 FT/G

For fun, if we include Doty's 1.3 SPG as a threshold as well, only freshmen Boozer and Wilson remain with him.

This Boozer guy won't go away! (all Cameron Boozer references).

Dybantsa and Wilson both appear in Note #004 on Tre Singleton's per 40 metrics and Note #020 on Tennessee commit Jalan Haralson.

Wilson also appears in Note #018 on Florida forward Thomas Haugh.

Bettiol comes up elsewhere, too (Note #014 on Corey Hadnot II).
