Note #029: Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn (The Shooting Anomaly)

Former Illinois and UNLV guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn entered the transfer portal following his 2025-26 junior season with the Runnin' Rebels, committing to Texas Tech for 2026-27.

In 2025-26, Gibbs-Lawhorn popped with the following per game metrics (35 GP, 34.1 MP/G):

  • 20.7 PPG
  • 3.1 RPG
  • 2.5 APG
  • 1.5 SPG
  • 0.5 BPG
  • 4.5 2P/G
  • 2.9 3P/G
  • 3.1 FT/G

Since 1980-81, only 16 NCAA Division I men's players have averaged at least 20.5 PPG, 3 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.5 SPG, 0.5 BPG, 4.5 2P/G, 2.5 3P/G, 3 FT/G in a single season. Four juniors besides Gibbs-Lawhorn hit these baselines:

< 25 PPG
1. Ray Allen (1995-96) - 23.4 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.7 SPG, 0.5 BPG, 5.1 2P/G, 3.3 3P/G, 3.4 FT/G in 35 GP

25-30 PPG
2. Quincy Douby (2005-06) - 25.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.8 SPG, 0.8 BPG, 5.2 2P/G, 3.5 3P/G, 4.5 FT/G in 33 GP
3. Lester Hudson (2007-08) - 25.7 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 4.5 APG, 2.8 SPG, 0.7 BPG, 5.1 2P/G, 3.8 3P/G, 4.3 FT/G in 33 GP

30+ PPG
4. Kevin Bradshaw (1989-90) - 31.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.7 SPG, 0.5 BPG, 7.8 2P/G, 2.6 3P/G, 7.9 FT/G in 28 GP

Bradshaw played two years at Bethune-Cookman (1983-85), then did not play for four years (1985-89, military service), before returning for his junior season above at U.S. International.

He had an impressive senior year (1990-91) as well for the Gulls (28 GP):

37.6 PPG (led NCAA Division I, scored DI record 72 points vs. Loyola Marymount), 5.1 RPG, 2.4 APG, 1.8 SPG, 1.0 BPG, 10.6 2P/G, 2.1 3P/G, 9.9 FT/G

Allen is a major focal point of Note #005 on Juke Harris.

Let's just look at Gibbs-Lawhorn's 2025-26 shooting splits:

57.1 2P% (156/273) and 41.4 3P% (101/244)

Since 1980-81 (when 3-pointers were introduced), no men's player has shot at least 57% from 2 on 270+ 2PA and 41% from 3 on 240+ 3PA in a single season except Gibbs-Lawhorn.

If we filter down to 56.5 2P%, however, we find:

Justin Wright-Foreman (2018-19) - 56.8 2P% (220/387), 42.5 3P% (110/259)

Wright-Foreman, notably, attempted 114 more 2s than Gibbs-Lawhorn, and 15 more 3s.

We keep whittling down to 55.0 2P% to uncover our next player:

Buddy Hield (2015-16) - 55.2 2P% (154/279), 45.7 3P% (147/322)

Lower the 2P% a little more to 54.0 and we get:

Stephen Curry (2007-08) - 54.0 2P% (155/287), 43.9 3P% (162/369)

Hield was just mentioned in Note #028 on 2026 NBA Draft entrant Christian Anderson.

Curry is seen in Note #006 on Jake Hall's freshman shooting barrage.
